There's something magical about the Maldives that words can barely capture, but as I reflect on my recent trip to Vaavu Fulidhoo, I'll do my best to paint the picture of this slice of paradise. Among all the islands in Vaavu atoll, Fulidhoo stands out for its enormous sandy beach and crystal clear lagoons that encircle the island – natural features that make it truly special in this already stunning part of the world.
Getting There: An Adventure Begins
My journey started at Male City, where I boarded a 50-seater speedboat near Jetty No. 7 by Shell Beans Cafe at 9:30 AM. I chose Fulidhoo specifically because it's the nearest island in Vaavu atoll from Male City – a mere 45-minute journey that would turn out to be an adventure in itself.
The first week of November blessed us with perfect weather. As we set out, the deep blue sky stretched endlessly overhead without a single cloud in sight, and the sea lay calm before us. After a brief stop at the airport to pick up some fellow travelers, we were on our way proper.
The cross-atoll journey is an experience in itself. Watching the endless stretch of reefs and the sea changing its hues like a chameleon was mesmerizing. The salty breeze whipped through the boat, keeping us refreshed throughout the journey. (Pro tip: Don't count on stable mobile data during the crossing – this is the time to disconnect and soak in the views!)
First Impressions: A Pristine Welcome
Around 10:45 AM, Fulidhoo began to emerge on the horizon, and what an entrance it made! The approach to the island is something I'll never forget – watching the deep blue waters gradually transform into every shade of blue imaginable, finally giving way to a stunning turquoise lagoon embracing a magnificent sandy beach.
What struck me immediately was the absence of a modern harbor – just a simple jetty with fishing boats and tourist excursion vessels bobbing gently in the lagoon. This lack of modern infrastructure only adds to the island's natural charm.
Island Life: Simple Pleasures
I stayed at Rushkokaa, a small but beautiful guesthouse just a five-minute walk from the jetty. The sandy roads of Fulidhoo – where slippers feel optional – led us to our temporary home, positioned perfectly in front of what I'd soon discover was the island's most beautiful beach.
The island itself is tiny, less than a kilometer in length, with a beach circumference of about 2 kilometers. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty. The guesthouse offered the perfect setup to enjoy it all – beach chairs and tables positioned to soak in the ocean views and that heavenly breeze.
Daily Rhythms
I couldn't resist taking a dip in the emerald lagoon before even checking in – the water was so inviting that leaving it became the day's biggest challenge. While the island doesn't boast modern restaurants, its local cafes serve up a satisfying mix of Indian, Italian, and Maldivian cuisine. Small marts and souvenir shops provide all the basics you might need, from sunscreen to beach wear.
Adventure Awaits: Activities Galore
Don't let Fulidhoo's small size fool you – the island is a treasure trove of activities for adventure seekers. The professional PADI dive center and fully equipped water sports center ensure that there's never a dull moment for those who love to explore the ocean's wonders.
One of the highlights of my stay was snorkeling in the house reef, where the underwater world comes alive with vibrant marine life. For those seeking an even more spectacular experience, I highly recommend hiring a small boat to visit the famous coral garden. The pristine corals and abundant sea life make it a must-visit spot for any snorkeling enthusiast.
Perhaps the most thrilling experience Fulidhoo offers is its proximity to the renowned nurse shark point. Swimming alongside these majestic creatures was both exhilarating and humbling – definitely not an experience you get every day! For a gentler but equally memorable encounter, head to the stingray beach right beside the Fulidhoo jetty. Watching and feeding these graceful creatures as they glide through the shallow waters became one of my daily rituals.
Dawn Patrol
My favorite experience came early one morning when I set out at 5:30 AM for a walk around the island. The 40-minute, 2-kilometer stroll along the beach became a nature watch as I spotted small crabs scuttling about, birds going about their morning routine, and fish swimming in the crystal-clear shallows.
The Verdict
Vaavu Fulidhoo might not offer the luxury resorts the Maldives is famous for, but what it does offer is something far more precious – an authentic island experience where nature's beauty takes center stage. Whether you're seeking a peaceful getaway or a chance to experience genuine island life, Fulidhoo delivers in spades.
From the mesmerizing ferry ride to the starlit evenings, every moment here feels like a gift wrapped in turquoise waters and tied with sandy shores. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best destinations are the ones that remain beautifully, perfectly simple.
